Legendary striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has finally announced an end to his football career at 41 after a storied career with top clubs in Europe.
The forward who had earlier decided to end his stay with AC Milan at the end of the season announced on Sunday he wouldn’t continue as a footballer.
“I want to thank my family, everyone close to me, for their patience. I want to thank my second family, the players. I want to thank (AC Milan head coach Stefano) Pioli and his staff for the responsibility you have given me. I want to thank the managers for the opportunity,” he said on the pitch after his team’s final match of the season.
“But most important of all: from my heart I want to thank you fans. You welcomed me with open arms, you made me feel at home. I will be a Milan fan for life. The time has come to say goodbye to football, but not to you.
“I have too many emotions that are passing through me. See you around, if you’re lucky. Forza Milan and goodbye”.
The Swedish striker enjoyed fruitful seasons with eight top clubs across Europe and LA Galaxy in the United States with two and three spells with Barcelona and AC Milan respectively.
With the exception of LA Galaxy and Malmo FF, Ibrahimovic won collective trophies everywhere he played.
He still reigns as the all-time top scorer of the Sweden national team and the only Swedish to score in three consecutive European championships.
He is also remembered for his stunning overhead kick from almost halfway the pitch which landed in the net of England in 2012.
